Atlanta Historical Walking Tours: Uncover Atlanta’s Hidden History

From a Cherokee trading post to the birth of the Civil Rights movement, Atlanta has seen its fair share of history - and we want to share it with you!
Our self guided walking tours of Atlanta are an amazing way to walk the timeline of Georgia’s capital, allowing you to celebrate the many cultural quirks and mysterious facts.
To give you a sneak peek at what you can expect from our Atlanta walking tours (self-guided), we’ve put together a few historical facts about the city!
Atlanta was Once Named “Marthasville”
Atlanta’s modern birth name could be considered to be “Terminus” - at least, that’s what it was called in the late 1830s, after the train station marking the end of the Western and Atlantic Railroad line.
However, “Terminus” residents (unsurprisingly) didn’t like the name and more “elegant” propositions were put forward. “Marthasville” was selected because Georgia’s then State Governor, Wilson Lumpkin, had a 16-year-old daughter named Martha.
But that wasn’t the end of it. In 1845, “Marthasville” was as popular as “Terminus”. Luckily, the chief engineer of the Georgia Railroad had a solution: “Atlanta”, the feminine version of “Atlantic”.
The Mascot For The Olympic Games in Atlanta Was Called “Izzy”

According to the official website, the name “Izzy” was chosen by 32 American kids aged 7 to 12.
When the mascot was designed, 3,300 children from 16 countries across the world suggested a name, which was eventually condensed to just 5: “Kirby”, “Starz”, “Zack”, “Gleamer” and - the winner - “Izzy”.
If Atlanta Was a Country, It Would Have The World’s 22nd Largest Economy
Not only that, but Atlanta is the global headquarters to some of the world’s biggest brands, including Coca-Cola, Dunkin’ Donuts, Delta Airlines, Mercedes-Benz USA, AT&T, Papa Johns, Chick-Fil-A and UPS.
