Origins of the Fox Theatre

The Fox Theatre in Atlanta was initially conceived in 1928 by Architect Olivier Vinour of the firm Marye, Alger, and Vinour, as the headquarters for the Atlanta Shriners organization. Inspired by the opulent temples of the Far East, its design echoed elements of Spain’s Alhambra and Egypt’s Temple of Karnak.

The result was a stunning mosque-style structure with domes, minarets, and archways. Inside, intricate gold leaf accents, luxurious textiles, and trompe l’oeil artistry created an atmosphere of grandeur. This grandeur was hailed by local media for being “picturesque and almost disturbing… beyond imagination.”

Changing Roles

The Shriners soon found the project financially unsustainable. To cover mounting costs, they leased the unfinished building to movie mogul William Fox, who envisioned it as part of his chain of “movie palaces.” With Fox’s investment, the $2.75 million project (equivalent to nearly $40 million today) was completed.

Opening in the Great Depression

On Christmas Day in 1929, the Fox Theatre opened to a sold-out audience with Disney’s Steamboat Willie. Its starry-night ceiling and lavish interiors wowed guests, making the venue an instant hit. However, the Great Depression soon took its toll, leading both William Fox and the theatre into bankruptcy by 1932. Despite financial struggles, the Fox became a popular venue, hosting Hollywood films, live performances, and concerts by major artists.

The 1940s

During the 1940s, the theatre’s Egyptian Ballroom became a popular dance venue, while the main auditorium continued to showcase films and live performances. The Fox allowed both Black and white patrons—unique in Atlanta at the time—although segregated seating remained in place until 1962.

Note: The segregation wall in the second dress circle remains today as a somber reminder of this period in American history.

Decline and the “Save The Fox” Campaign

By the 1960s, suburban multiplexes led to a decline in grand downtown theatres. In 1974, the Fox faced demolition when Southern Bell proposed replacing it with a parking deck. Outraged citizens launched the “Save The Fox” campaign, rallying public support with benefit concerts and penny drives. Performers like Liberace and Lynyrd Skynyrd joined the effort, ultimately saving the theatre from destruction.

Restoration and Preservation

In 1975, Atlanta Landmarks, Inc. took over the theatre's stewardship, initiating meticulous restoration efforts. Original features were preserved while modern safety enhancements were integrated. In 1976, the Fox Theatre was designated a National Historic Landmark, solidifying its place in American cultural history.

The Fox Theatre Today

Since its reopening, the Fox Theatre has hosted legendary acts, including Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Prince, whose final performance took place there in 2016. It has become a key venue for Broadway productions, such as the world premiere of The Phantom of the Opera’s touring show.

The Events Spaces

Key elements of the Fox Theatre's design include the 4,665-seat main auditorium, modeled after an Arabian courtyard. Its ceiling resembles a starlit night sky, with 96 embedded crystal stars—some flickering—and a projection of drifting clouds. In 2010, one of the stars was revealed to be crafted from a Coca-Cola bottle fragment.

The Egyptian Ballroom, inspired by the temples of Ramses II at Karnak, features intricate motifs, while the mezzanine Ladies Lounge is adorned with a replica of King Tut's throne and sphinx-embellished makeup tables. Trompe-l'œil techniques are abundant, with painted beams masquerading as wood and plaster elements simulating gold leaf.

In addition to its main stage and luxurious ballrooms, the Marquee Club is a premium lounge space spanning 10,000 square feet, adding a modern touch to the historic venue.

The Mighty Mo

At the heart of the Fox Theatre’s legacy is the “Mighty Mo,” a custom-built pipe organ crafted by M. P. Möller, Inc. in 1929. Boasting 3,622 pipes ranging from the size of a ballpoint pen to towering 32-foot structures, the Mighty Mo is the second-largest theater organ in the U.S. and the largest of its kind built by Möller.

This instrument mimics the sound of a full orchestra and includes a marimba, xylophone, sleigh bells, and silent movie sound effects such as car horns and bird whistles. Additionally, it incorporates 12 church organ ranks, making it adaptable for various performances.

The Mighty Mo remains the centerpiece of the Fox Theatre’s charm, entertaining audiences during film festivals, ballet productions, and special events.

The Fox as a Private Residence

Within the theater is a 3,640-square-foot apartment that once served as the private residence of Joe Patten, the Fox's technical director from 1974 to 2004. Patten was instrumental in restoring the Mighty Mo and saving the theater from demolition. This unique residence has thick walls, a secret passage to the auditorium's spotlight platform, and a private street entrance.
