Discover the Pinball Museum
“The Seattle Pinball Museum stands as a testament to the cultural significance and enduring charm of pinball. Join us on this nostalgic journey, where the flick of a flipper and the ring of a bell evoke fond memories and create new ones.”
The Pinball Museum in Seattle is no ordinary museum. Where visitors would typically pace through large halls, stopping intermittently to silently absorb meaty paragraphs of informative text, the Pinball Museum is different. It beckons noise and laughter and fun.
Essentially, it's an arcade allowing its visitors to hang out – drinking and snacking – while they actually PLAY the games. That’s right, you won’t see any ‘Do Not Touch’ signs in this museum!
Since the museum opened, its collection has grown to include an impressive 50 games from more than 60 years ago. Take a voyage through modern pop culture history with Captain Fantastic (1976), Guns ‘n Roses (1994), Lord of the Rings (2001), and Toy Story 4 (2022), among other classic household names. Ultimately, with a touch of retro charm, this delightful museum offers a unique journey through the history of pinballing, combining fun and education.
Preserving Gaming History
“Our vision was to create an interactive space that celebrated the rich history of these timeless gaming marvels.”
Seattle’s Pinball Museum was proudly opened in late August 2010, but some of the machines it now houses date back as far as 1961. Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted with row upon row of pinball machines, each a meticulously maintained piece of gaming history. Spanning all eras of Pinball culture the exhibition – and unique concept of actually allowing its visitors to play the games – makes this museum truly one of a kind.
Not only does the museum house countless games from different decades, they are also produced by a plethora of companies. There are games from Dutch Pinball, Spooky Pinball, Jersey Jack Pinball, Stern Pinball, and VP Cabs. In an additional twist – making this museum even cooler – you can even purchase your own Jersey Jack Pinball machine through the museum as they are the only Jersey Jack dealer in Washington state.
“This meticulous curation showcases the evolution of pinball craftsmanship throughout the decades, providing a comprehensive experience for enthusiasts and novices alike.”
Each pinball machine is a work of art in itself, featuring intricate details, vibrant colours, and classic themes that reflect the pop culture of their respective eras. From sci-fi and fantasy to music and movies, the themes of the machines offer a nostalgic trip down memory lane for players of all ages.
Visiting the Museum
To be frank, there’s really only one purpose of visiting the Pinball Museum, and that’s to play pinball! All games are included with the admission fee and there’s plenty of snacking and drinking options so you really can just get stuck in for as long as your heart desires. However, if you do wish to delve into the history a little more then you’ll be pleased to know that each machine has a small information print out above it that has all the details. From the early days of mechanical pinball to the advent of electronic machines, the museum offers a fascinating educational experience.
To keep things interesting, the museum alternates the machines regularly. But there are some long term residents shall we say, those among the likes of ‘Stranger Things’, ‘The Simpsons’, and ‘Lord of the Rings’. Either way, it’ll take a few goes on any machine before you hone the skills necessary to master this fast-paced game.
