Discover the Carrie Bradshaw Apartment in NYC

For fans of the iconic TV series “Sex and the City”, the Carrie Bradshaw Apartment is more than just a fictional character's home—it's a cultural landmark. Located in New York City, this charming brownstone has become a pilgrimage site for admirers of the show and its protagonist, played by Sarah Jessica Parker.

Despite the fact that in the show, Carrie Bradshaw lived on the Upper East Side, exterior shots of her apartment were filmed at various locations. In Season 1, the building exteriors were initially shot at 960 Madison Avenue, featuring a storefront with apartments above. Later in the season, the scenes moved to a brownstone at 34 East 62nd Street.

By episode 14 of Season 2, Carrie's stoop scenes were relocated to the charming, tree-lined 64 Perry Street. From Season 3 until the series finale, the exterior remained at 66 Perry Street, where fans can visit for that iconic "Sex and the City" selfie.

Carrie Bradshaw's Apartment on the Screen

Carrie Bradshaw's apartment, one of TV's most memorable residences, is often associated with the Upper East Side of Manhattan, known for its upscale shopping, trendy restaurants, and exclusive apartment buildings. It was also the fictional residence of the socialites in "Gossip Girl". It is also home to Museum Mile, which includes renowned institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. Carrie’s apartment in this posh area perfectly reflected her glamorous lifestyle and added to the show’s glamorous flare.

Famous Residents of 64 Perry Street

Beyond its association with "Sex and the City”, 64 Perry Street has had a repertoire of popular residents such as fashion icon Tim Gunn, known for "Project Runway”. Gunn resided on the top floor of the building for 16 years. Additionally, Woody Allen used the location for filming scenes in his 1990 movie "Alice." The building's allure, combined with its television fame, cements its status as a notable landmark of New York real estate.

Exterior Details and Real Estate Value

Although the show's character paid $700 a month for her rent-stabilized apartment, making her luxurious lifestyle somewhat plausible, the real townhouse is far more valuable. In 2013, it sold for a staggering $13,250,000, a testament to its desirability and unique charm. Built in 1899, this 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom home has a lush garden with a nearly 300-year-old chestnut tree, a stoop, wrought-iron railings, and large windows that exude charm and elegance. It has been owned by only three families before its last sale.

Interior Details

The interior of 64 Perry Street is as impressive as its exterior. Throughout "Sex and the City's" six-season run on HBO, fans fell in love with Carrie Bradshaw’s studio apartment, which some might argue was more of a one-bedroom apartment. This ultimate bachelorette pad was cozy enough to be realistic for an aspiring writer, yet spacious enough to make viewers envious.

The original architect, Robert Mook, incorporated stunning archways and ornate crown and ceiling molding, giving the home a unique personality. Throughout the brownstone are elegant herringbone wood floors, complemented by gold accents lining mirrors and windows, adding a touch of glamour to the rooms.

The home features six marble fireplaces with intricate details, five spacious bedrooms, and three bathrooms, covering nearly 4,000 square feet of living space. Yet the highlight for many was the walk-in closet that connected her bedroom to the bathroom—a true fashionista’s dream.

Airbnb Experience: “Carrie’s Apartment”

In celebration of the "Sex and the City" revival with "And Just Like That…,", Warner Bros. partnered with Airbnb to recreate Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic apartment. Sarah Jessica Parker also played an active role in the recreation. For just $23 a night, fans could book a stay in this meticulously designed replica, which was located in Chelsea, not the Upper East Side.

The recreated apartment included Carrie’s fabulous closet, her writing desk and laptop affixed with a Post-It note, her bedside cordless phone and pistachio-painted walls, as well as the iconic chair designed by her ex, Aidan Shaw. Although the actual Perry Street building doesn’t exist in real life, the Airbnb experience gave fans a chance to immerse themselves in Carrie’s world.

“I’m excited for our audience to experience Carrie’s New York like never before and walk in her shoes, quite literally, for the first time.”

The Airbnb stay included a digital welcome from Parker, a brunch in Chelsea, a dress-up session in Carrie’s closet, and a photoshoot featuring some of her most iconic fashion statements. In November 2021, fans could request to book the apartment for one-night stays. The experience was not only a unique fan opportunity but also a charitable one, as Airbnb pledged to donate to The Studio Museum in Harlem, which showcases contemporary art by artists of African descent.

Respecting the Current Residents

When visiting the apartment remember to be respectful of the neighborhood and the current residents. If you’re determined to get that iconic photo, it's acceptable to take pictures from the public sidewalk in front of the building, as per the signage requesting visitors keep off the stairs. Previously, there was a sign requesting $1 donations to support homeless dogs and cats, but this donation box is no longer present.

Even celebrities aren't exempt from the rules. In October 2014, Sarah Jessica Parker herself caused a stir when she filmed a commercial for her shoe line on the public sidewalk in front of 66 Perry. The situation escalated when she placed shoes on the stoop, prompting a significant reaction from the owners.
