Contained within the Eclectic Menagerie Park is a series of giant metal sculptures—ranging from a towering spider to a reeling fishing pole—that suddenly come into view as you drive along Highway 288 in Houston, Texas. The park is situated on the grounds of the Texas Pipe and Supply Company and features a collection of over 20 sculptures.

Creating Eclectic Menagerie Park
The origins of Eclectic Menagerie Park trace back to 1987 when the first sculpture—a concrete hippo—was placed on the property of Texas Pipe and Supply by its chairman, Jerry Rubenstein. From there, the park grew organically, adding various sculptures over the years. A rhino followed, then Snoopy piloting a red-and-white airplane, and before long, the creations began taking center stage.
The Park’s Artists: Ron Lee and Mark Rankin
Ron Lee, a veteran welder who worked at Texas Pipe and Supply for over 50 years, is the mastermind behind most of the park's installations. His passion for welding and creativity and his ability to see art in everyday equipment onsite, led him to repurpose leftover industrial materials into giant creatures, transforming the company’s grounds into an open-air museum.
In addition to Lee’s contributions, local sculptor Mark Rankin also contributed to the park, lending his expertise in light metals to create several other sculptures. This added a different artistic flare to the collection. Since Lee's passing in 2017, no new sculptures have been added, yet his legacy—and Rankin’s work—lives on through the art that continues to captivate passersby.

If you’re approaching from Houston on SH-288, take the Bellfort exit, turn left, and make a U-turn before taking the feeder road slowly to get the best view of the sculptures. For those coming from the south, it’s best to drive past the park and loop around, as it is only visible from the southbound side of the highway.
