Discover Oak Street Beach

Oak Street Beach, situated along the shoreline of Lake Michigan near the iconic Drake Hotel, is one of Chicago’s most popular and picturesque beaches. Since its creation the beach has remained a trendy and busy part of Chicago’s lakefront.

However, Oak Street Beach stands out not only because of its convenient location but also for its fantastic amenities. From the volleyball courts to the bike paths, it serves as a place where residents and visitors come to unwind, stay active, and take in the breathtaking backdrop of the city skyline.

While the size of the beach has fluctuated—due in part to changes in lake levels and ongoing efforts to manage shoreline erosion—it continues to hold an iconic status in Chicago’s summer culture.

The Creation of Oak Street Beach

Early Origins

The history of Oak Street Beach dates back to the late 1800s, when it was created as part of an effort to protect Chicago’s lake shore from erosion. In the 1860s, the land that would eventually become Oak Street Beach was originally part of Lincoln Park, which had started as a public cemetery before being transformed into parkland.

The lakeshore, however, was prone to damage from storms and erosion, prompting the Lincoln Park Commission to develop a breakwater system in the 1870s. This breakwater, extending from Oak Street to Ohio Street, helped protect Lake Shore Drive and create new beach space.

The beach itself was formed by sand washing up against the northern side of what is now known as Streeterville, a neighborhood that came about after a series of disputes between lakefront property owners and a man named George Streeter in the late 19th century.

Streeter’s efforts to claim a landmass formed by sand and silt eventually led to legal battles with the city, and after his eviction, the land became part of Chicago. The sand that accumulated here helped form what would become Oak Street Beach.

Growing Popularity and Beach Development

In the 1890s, with the completion of the Chicago Drainage Canal—which improved water quality by diverting sewage from Lake Michigan—Oak Street Beach became a popular swimming destination. By the early 20th century, despite its relatively small size, the beach attracted tens of thousands of visitors on hot summer days.

As Chicagoans flocked to Oak Street Beach, property owners in the surrounding area began to complain about the crowds, leading the Lincoln Park Commission to impose limits on the hours during which the public could use the beach. This sparked protests, with citizens calling for beach extensions and more amenities.

Throughout the 1920s, Oak Street Beach continued to grow in popularity. In 1934, with the creation of the Chicago Park District, federal funds from the Works Progress Administration were used to further improve the lakefront. This included the shipment of sand—arriving via barges—from the Indiana Dunes and the construction of a pedestrian underpass connecting Oak Street Beach to Michigan Avenue, which provided easier access for beachgoers.

Beach with a Skyline View

Perhaps what sets Oak Street Beach apart from other urban beaches in the U.S. is its stunning views. The contrast between the sandy shore and the towering skyscrapers of downtown Chicago creates a truly unique experience. It’s no wonder that Oak Street Beach has garnered attention from travel publications such as Travel + Leisure, which named it one of the best beaches in the U.S.

While Chicago may not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking of top beach destinations, Oak Street Beach has proven that a Midwestern metropolis can offer a world-class beachfront experience.
