Discover the Fountain of Wealth
Singapore, a city renowned for its modernity and opulence, contains a watery treasure that transcends the confines of a conventional metropolis. The mesmerising Fountain of Wealth represents the nation’s prosperity, and at certain times throughout the day, offers visitors a chance to take charge of their own financial futures, by casting a wish of wealth for themselves.
Built in 1995 at a cost of $6 million, the fountain has allowed Singapore to take its global status and wealth to new heights. Today, the Fountain of Wealth remains an unmissable feature of Suntec City.
The World’s Largest Fountain
On the topic of new heights, the Fountain of Wealth spans an impressive 1,683.07 square metres and is 13.8 metres tall and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fountain in the world, in 1998. As such, it became one of Singapore’s most popular attractions, up there with Marina Bay Sands and the unique treasures concealed within Changi Airport.
Much like the Marina Bay Light Show, the Fountain of Wealth comes to life each evening. Jets of water that cascade down around the smaller fountain from a ring 200 ft above, create a wall of mist that’s used to project light, sound, and colour. Laser beams dance across the water like a rainbow mirage, expertly timed shards of water jet playfully, and sound bellows from concealed speakers, adding a rhythmic depth to the nightly performance.
Designing the Fountain of Wealth
The fountain is made from sand-cast silicone bronze, and was designed, manufactured, and installed by DCG Design and Meridian Projects (from Melbourne Australia). Even though it is the centrepiece of a sprawling mall complex, Suntec City, the fountain is encompassed by a lush green backdrop that complements the awe-inspiring spectacle. The ring itself is a feat of greatness. Modelled off the Hindu Mandala, it measures 21 metres in diameter, with a circumference of 66 metres, and is supported on four sides by slanted bronze pillars.
Cultural Significance of the Fountain
Its sheer size is awe-inspiring, but the fountain's significance goes far beyond its dimensions. In Singaporean culture, the concept of wealth transcends mere financial abundance. It signifies prosperity in various aspects of life, including happiness, health, and well-being. The Fountain of Wealth encapsulates this holistic understanding of wealth, making it an emblem of hope, aspiration, and collective success.
According to the Chinese, water is one of the most powerful elements of nature, symbolising life as well as the aforementioned principles of wealth and good fortune. It's no wonder then, that the water at the Fountain of Wealth flows inwards, signalling an inward movement of riches for all who stand before it. As well as those who work in the offices.
Inspiration for the design of Suntec City and the Fountain of Wealth was based on the Taoist principles of feng shui. A bird's eye view of the fountain gives away the intention behind its design and location. Sitting at the centre of five towering office blocks, said to represent the fingers and thumb of a left hand coming out of the ground, the fountain depicts a gold ring in the palm of this hand. This is said to symbolise spiritual unity, harmony, and equality between all Singaporeans – Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian, and others.

Rituals and Beliefs
Visitors to the Fountain of Wealth can partake in a special ritual that locals believe will draw wealth and prosperity into their lives. To perform the ritual visitors must simply approach the smaller fountain, make a wish, put their hand into the water, and walk around the fountain three times repeating the wish and keeping their hand in the water. Due to the fountain’s two-part design it is possible to approach the smaller fountain via a narrow boardwalk, when the larger ring fountain is switched off in the daytime. Just make sure to only approach the Fountain of Wealth with good intentions, if you want your wish to come true!
