John Batman is most remembered for a controversial treaty he signed with Aboriginal people in 1835, through which he attempted to acquire large swaths of land in exchange for goods such as blankets, knives, and flour. However, the treaty was later deemed invalid by colonial authorities, and it remains a topic of historical debate, especially regarding its fairness and long-term impact on Aboriginal communities.
